What is Templating and Why it is Important to Your Countertops?

Home updates are always exciting, especially putting in new countertops. A countertop completely changes the way a kitchen or bathroom appears. At Rock With Us, we work with our clients from start to finish, providing a perfect match for your room.

As we prepare for a job, we go over the 5 steps for a perfect new counter with each of our clients. These are:

Step 1 – Selecting the perfect stone

Step 2 – Custom templating with digital laser technology

Step 3 – Previewing template and okaying the project

Step 4 – Installing the new countertop

Step 5 – Providing maintenance instructions for ongoing care

While each of these steps is significant, today we want to talk about templating, why it’s important and how it works.

What is Countertop Laser Templating?

A template is a pattern used in the construction of countertops and other furniture. Traditionally, countertop templating was the designing and building of a physical model countertop to scale using cheap lightweight materials. This was done before the actual countertop was cut and installed.

Since the introduction of laser templating in the 1990’s, experienced countertop builders use advanced laser technology to produce templates. At Rock With Us, our template makers are able to take extremely precise measurements and transfer them into digital files that show us the optimal shape and size of a countertop based on your kitchen layout.

Why is Countertop Templating Important?

Using laser templating provides exact measurements with no room for human error. Before designing a high-end garment, clothing designers make a template out of paper. Architects draw blueprints before attempting a build. With expensive materials like granite and quartz being cut to make your counter, it makes sense to invest in a detailed guide before cutting begins.

Measuring on your own is helpful for an initial quote, or to get an idea on how much of a material might be needed. However, using your own measurements could be disastrous if you don’t account for corners, edges, or encroaching furniture. When a measurement is off, even by a fraction, it affects the whole design of your project.

Granite countertops are beautiful, durable, and come in a variety of colours and patterns. Before cutting into a pricey piece of igneous rock, it’s crucial that a template is used. Here are a few of the benefits of using a digital template for granite countertops:

  • Removes guesswork
  • Puts the onus on the contractor
  • Digital templates can be uploaded to Drawing Exchange Format files for precise sawing and milling.
  • Fast and efficient
  • Improves accuracy of cutting

When you work with Rock With Us, we request a manual measurement for a quote. We then follow-up with exact measurements taking with our laser countertop templating equipment. The outcome is a perfect fit every time.
